The races

The Hollows are generally the enemies of Soul Society and the Soul Reapers. They are a class of evil spirits, which have formerly been human spirts, that where not sent to Soul Society in time after death.
Due to this they lose their sense of being which raises a craving for human souls. They usually appear with a white mask covering their entire faces. Each mask has a unique design. Another characteristic of the hollows is that there is a hole where their heart is supposed to be.

The Arrancar are a stronger form of hollow, which has acquired humanoid form and even some of the Soul Reaper Powers. They become the primary antagonists later in the series. In opposite to the hollows, the masks of the Arrancar are partially broken and reveal parts of their faces.





The humans appearing in Bleach are very like the residents of a modern Japan. They mostly live in Karakura Town. Most are unable to see or to interact with spirits in any way.
Nevertheless there are some exceptions, some seemingly chosen ones, who are born with the ability to speak and interact with spirits, with the degree of interaction growing with time.
Obviously it is possible to become aware of spirits though, even if not having been born with this gift, as many of the humans appearing in the series have only become aware of the spirits through their interaction with Ichigo Kurosaki, the series' protagonist.




The Bounts are nothing else than a group of humans with special abilities. They are the main antagonists during the series. To obtain everlasting youth, the bounts live by consuming the souls of humans. Historically they have been known as vampires to the societies. Just like the Soul reapers, they have got a unique, powerful weapon which is called "doll". Nevertheless the dolls seldom really look like a weapon, they rather look like self sufficient creatures when they are releays. However they can be used as weapons in form of large battleaxes, a sword or a whip for example. Their leader is Jin Kariya.





The Soul Reapers are the ones protecting the souls of the humans after they died, granting them access to Soul Society and shielding them from the hollows.
Their base is in Soul Society
Each Soul Reaper possesses special abilities and a zanpakuto, which is a sword that doubles as both, a weapon and a s well a physical manifestation of the owner's soul.
What is another characteristic of the zanpakuto is that it has its own personality, which sometimes is at odds with its owner.
